Dennis Gorman (No. 25) driving the new Maranello RS9 LS started on grid 6 for final 1 making up 4 places to finish 2nd behind Mike Simpson and ahead of Mark Litchfield, Tom Fawcett, Justin Edgar and Stefan Di Resta.
In the Grand Final, Gorman started on grid 2 and held that position until having a proper battle for 2nd with James Gornall in the final few laps which unfortunately ended in contact between them on the last lap resulting in a DNF for Gorman and initially an exclusion from the race for James Gornall which was appealed and reduced to a 5 place penalty by the clerks of the course.
John Pike (No. 37), who after an piston seizure in final 1, started on grid 18 for the Grand Final. The 2010 NKF Senior Rotax Max champion showed amazing skill and true class by surgically carving his way through the field on his Maranello RS9 to finish a hard won 4th place in the process of which he earned fastest lap of the race and the top rookie trophy. At the trophy presentation Pike was asked by grand final winner and Super One veteran Mike Simpson to “slow down” lest the rookie threaten Simpsons championship hopes after Pike bettered Simpsons fastest time in the final by just over two tenths of a second.
The RS9 LS is proving to be perfectly suited to the Formula KGP BMB engine and the Vega XH tyres with Gorman and Pike needing minimal setup changes to the karts to be on, and indeed in the case of Pike, to set the pace. Both drivers said that their chassis’ handled beautifully.
Special thanks go to Gordy Finlayson of GFR and Bob Astill at Kartune Motorsport for their help and support with John Pike and Dennis Gorman.
The next round of the MSA Super One British Championship is at Shenington Kart Club on the 7th and 8th of May.
